Cell
Phones are Good: Humphreys is Wrong
by Scott Kimbell
Since
the beginning of time mankind has been plagued by cell phones.
In the article, "Cellular Dissonance" by Fran
Humphrey, she talks about how cell phone use in todays teenagers
is the downfall of society and adolesence. By analyzing
Humphreys article this paper will argue that Humphreys is
wrong when she says cell phones are destroying society.
First,
Humphreys doesn't know what its like to be a teenager in
todays society, like when she says "Whatever happened
to good old-fashioned human contact?" Well right
there is the problem with her whole article. She's
old fashion and doesn't know what it's like today.
I use cell phones to talk to my friends, but sometimes I
can text message them so I don't even have to talk to them
that makes it easier because I can just say quickly what
I want without having to spend my minutes talking about
other stuff. That's one reason why Humphreys is wrong
when she says cell phones are destroying society.
Another
reason why the author of the article does not know what
shes talking about is when shes talking about cell phones.
In paragraph 13, she says, "Research done by Dr. Phillips
at Brown University shows that while cell phone use by high-schoolers
has increased, social dexterity is at an all-time low."
I don't know what dexterity is, but I'm sure Humphreys doesn't
know what she's talking about, specially since Dr. Phillips
probably doesn't even know any high school kids. Last
year I was in high school (now I'm not, I'm sure you know
that since your grading my college exam but I could be a
sophomore or junior or something) last year in high school
we talked on the cell phone all the time but sometimes the
principle would yell at us for it. But we still all
graduated so therefore Humphreys is wrong again in saying
that cell phones are bad for kids.
Finally,
another reason why Humphreys says cell phones shouldn't
be made anymore is that the internet and videogames are
so big today. She says that, "Today's kids are
increasingly more technologically savvy than adults, due
to the over-saturated mileu of video games, the internet,
and cell phones (Humphreys 2)". This just proves
my point once again that Humphreys is wrong because video
games help society and teenagers because it helps if there's
going to be a war and many of the games are war games which
help people shoot at targets, like in Iraq.
In
conclusion, I have proven that Fran Humphreys in her article
"Cellular Dissonance" is wrong because of what
she says about cell phones. I talked about how she's
old-fashioned, how she doesn't know about high school kids,
and Iraq to prove my thesis. Therefore, cell phones
should be used more often, don't you think?
